Meet 13-year-old Zulaikha Patel, one of the students who helped lead a protest against the discriminatory hair policy at Pretoria Girls High School (a formerly white-only institution in South Africa).
Can a child just be?
Our hair was meant to grow towards the sun, and when a black child is told they cannot wear their hair in its natural glory, they’re also being told that they cannot be their natural selves – even on their natural land. It’s telling them to erase their blackness. That they don’t have the freedom to live as the beautiful beings God has created them to be. The system is still designed to enslave black bodies everywhere, but there is something a bout seeing a little black girl in Zulaikha’s position that hits my heart like a dagger. This is a fight fought too soon, still I’m watching her experience with pride.
